Apple Tart with Brown Sugar Crumble

Are you looking for a fairly simple, last minute Thanksgiving Day dessert recipe? We just finished baking this delicious smelling apple tart in under an hour from prep to out of the oven. And, it’s all made from scratch! You most likely have all the ingredients on hand in your pantry, making the tart even easier to prepare. It’s also dairy free, very easy to assemble, and bakes up in 15 minutes. The delicate part is slicing the apples thinly. If you have a mandoline, consider using it to save a few minutes. Otherwise, a handy paring knife works just as well. Serve warm with a dairy free (or not) whipped topping or vanilla ice cream!

Ingredients:

  • Crumble:
  • 2/3 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons margarine
  • *1 tablespoon brown sugar (to sprinkle on top of apple slices before baking)

  • Apples:
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3 tablespoons margarine, melted
  • juice from 1/4 of a fresh lemon
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 apples, cored, cut in half and sliced thin

Method of Preparation:

  1. Prepare the crumble by placing all the ingredients into a medium mixing bowl. Mix with your hands until ingredients form a homogenous mixture and set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, add in all ingredients except the apples and stir together.
  3. Slice the apples in half, core, and slice thinly (about 1/8″ thickness).
  4. Add apples to the bowl with the spices and melted margarine and stir to coat well.
  5. Arrange apples skin side up in a 13.5″x4″ rectangular tart pan so that the slices are almost standing upright. See photo below. You may have to keep pushing the apples closer together to fit all the slices in.
  6. Sprinkle slices with 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and then top with the crumble mixture.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350F for 15 minutes. Remove and let cool slightly before serving warm with your favorite whipped topping, ice cream, or both!

Enjoy!
