Sweetened Sweet Potato Fries

We’re in love with these easy to make sweet potato fries. Most people think that in order to make fries at home you need to have a deep fryer. While you can absolutely make deliciously crunchy fries in the deep fryer, you can also bake crispy fries in the oven. While they won’t have the exact same texture that you would get from deep frying, baked fries still make a great side to pretty much anything. And, we have a little trick to make them crunchy – cornstarch! A few days ago, we posted a recipe for these super tasty salmon burgers. We also decided we had to share the recipe for the sweet potatoes fries along with the most delicious dipping sauce you will ever taste!

Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 4 large sweet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil

Dipping Sauce

  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon milk – just enough to make a thick dipping sauce

Method of Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 450F.
  2. Peel and slice sweet potatoes lengthwise into equal pieces (so that the fries cook evenly).
  3. Place fries into a bowl of ice water and let sit for 2-3 hours to draw out the starch from the potatoes.
  4. Drain water, pat dry with paper towel, and transfer to a large bowl.
  5. Coat with cornstarch, then the salt, white pepper, and cayenne. Mix thoroughly to coat all the fries. Then add the olive oil and coat evenly.
  6. Transfer to a large sheet tray and arrange the fries in a single layer.
  7. Bake at 450F for 40-45 minutes.
  8. While fries are baking, you can prepare the dipping sauce.
    • Take the powdered sugar, maple syrup, and milk and whisk together in a small bowl until smooth.
  9. Eat the fries on their own or serve alongside your favorite sandwich or burger.
